Mental health and housing : joined up thinking for 21st Century community mental health ....
RJA consultancy is essentially a development practice, and not a management consultancy; that is to say, we are here to get things done. In all our work we aim to act as catalysts, seeking out synergies and win/win solutions to inter-agency issues.
Service and infrastructure development
RJA has been and continues to be involved in frontline service development, from supported accommodation and floating support schemes, to new mental health services (and most often, in bringing both together ), and also in local mental health housing needs analysis and in crafting a comprehensive ( or “whole systems” ) mental health accommodation strategy.
But we also see the need to promote infra-structure development, at local, regional and national levels, where in particular we have worked with government bodies, think tanks and campaigning organisations to promote the case for inter-agency understanding and partnerships around mental health and housing.
Training
We give high priority to knowledge and skills development, where we are keen to identify and promote innovation and good practice. What training we do tends to have a development focus, bringing updates on new guidance, frameworks and opportunities, but stressing workshop participation and action learning. In the fast-moving world of inter-agency development, a workshop is often as or more effective than a report, as a catalyst for agreement and change.
Our particular area of expertise lies in the encouragement of reflective practice and shared action learning, essential for the development of a “psychologically informed environment”.
Opportunity audit
In the grey area between research and development lies the open-ended field that we call “opportunity audit”.
Broader in scope than a feasibility study - which looks only at one proposal which has already been broadly identified and agreed - opportunity audit is about finding out what could be done, checking and crafting the basis for shared vision and eventual agreements.
It is, we believe, the essence of inter-agency development.
Mentoring
We are also happy to arrange mentoring arrangements, whether with members of our own team, or between agencies and staff with compatible interests in your local area.

Contracting with RJA
There are three principal formats for RJA involvement -
commissioned work;
an agreed retainer;
pro bono work.
For busy managers, running the “core” business to meet challenging targets is demanding enough. Scouting to tease out what could be done, crafting a degree of shared enterprise, and brokering new partnerships, takes considerable analytic skills, diplomacy, knowledge, energy, imagination and above all, time.
When you know you really need to do something about housing and mental health, but you’re not sure what can really be done, that may just be the time to call us.
